Steigleder

Steigleder, family of German musicians:

(1) Utz Steigleder , organist and composer; b. place and date unknown; d. Stuttgart, Oct. 7 or 8, 1581. He was in the service of Duke Ulrich of Württemberg in Stuttgart from at least 1534, holding the posts of court and abbey organist. His only known work is Veni Sancte Spiritus for 6 Voices (ed. in Die Motette, no. 457, Stuttgart, 1963).

(2) Adam Steigleder , organist and composer, son of the preceding; b. Stuttgart, Feb. 19, 1561; d. there, Nov. 8, 1633. He studied with S. Lohet (1575-78) and in Rome (1580-83); was organist at the Stuttgart abbey church (1583-92), the Michaeliskirche in Schwabisch Hall (1592-95), and at Ulm Minster (1595-1625); then returned to Stuttgart. His extant works consist of a Passa e mezo and a Toccata primi toni.

(3) Johann Ulrich Steigleder , organist and composer, son of the preceding; b. Schwäbisch Hall, March 22, 1593; d. Stuttgart, Oct. 10, 1635. He was a pupil of his father, and although lame, he served as organist at Lindau’s Stephanskirche on Lake Constance (1613−17). In Stuttgart, he was organist at the abbey church (1617−35) and the ducal court (1627−35). He died of the plague. His extant works comprise Ricercar tabulatura, organis et organoedis (Stuttgart, 1624) and Tabulatur-Buch (Strasbourg, 1627), both ed. in the Corpus of Early Keyboard Music, XIII/1 (1968).
