Söderström(-Olow), (Anna) Elisabeth (b Stockholm, 1927). Swed. soprano. Opera début Drottningholm 1947 (Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne), while still student. Joined Stockholm Royal Opera 1950. Salzburg début 1955; Glyndebourne 1957; NY Met 1959; CG 1960 (with Royal Swed. Opera). Notable Strauss singer, but wide repertory of roles, including Janáček roles of Emilia Marty, Káťa Kabanová, and Jenůfa. Created Juliana Bordereau in Argento's The Aspern Papers, Dallas 1988. Accomplished singer of Britten's vocal music in addition to his operatic roles. Art. dir. Drottningholm Court Th. 1993–6. Hon. CBE 1985.
