Socor, Matei

Socor, Matei, Romanian composer; b. Iaşi, Sept. 28, 1908; d. Bucharest, May 30, 1980. He studied theory with Castaldi at the Bucharest Cons. (1927–29) and composition with Karg-Elert at the Leipzig Cons. (1930–33). He then was active as a composer and teacher in his homeland.


DRAMATIC: Opera : Conu Leonida fata cu reactiunea (1976; Bucharest, Dec. 28, 1978). ORCH .: Concerto for Clarinet, Horn, Cello, and Orch. (1939); Passacaglia for Cello and Chamber Orch. (1944; also for Violin or Cello and Piano); Violin Concerto (1955). CHAMBER : Piano Sonata (1932); Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Piano (1936); Wind Sextet (1968). VOCAL : Mama, poem for Mezzo-soprano, Chorus, and Orch. (1949); choruses; songs.
