Schmitt-Walter, Karl
Schmitt-Walter, Karl, German baritone; b. Gernersheim am Rhein, Dec. 23, 1900; d. Kreuth, Oberbayern, Jan. 14, 1985. He studied in Nuremberg and Munich. He made his operatic debut in 1921 in Oberhausen; then sang in Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, and Dortmund. He was a member of the Wiesbaden Opera (1929–34), the Berlin Deutsche Oper (1934–50), and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1950–61); also sang at Bayreuth and Salzburg. In 1957 he became a prof. of voice at the Munich Academy of Music.
