Schmitt, Georg Aloys

Schmitt, Georg Aloys, German pianist, conductor, and composer, son of Aloys Schmitt and nephew of Jacob Schmitt; b. Hannover, Feb. 2, 1827; d. during a rehearsal in Dresden, Oct. 15, 1902. He studied with his father, and after theory training from Vollweiler in Heidelberg, toured Europe as a pianist. He subsequently devoted himself mainly to theatrical conducting. He was court conductor at Schwerin (1857–92), and in 1893 was appointed director of the Mozartverein in Dresden, which had a multitudinous choral ensemble (some 1, 400 members) and its own orch. He wrote 3 operas, orch. works, chamber music, piano pieces, songs, etc., and also ed. and completed Mozart’s Mass in C minor (1901).
