Salter, Lionel (Paul)

Salter, Lionel (Paul) , English conductor, pianist, harpsichordist, and writer on music; b. London, Sept. 8, 1914. He studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London and at the Univ. of Cambridge with Dent and Ord (B.A., 1935; B.Mus., 1936), then returned to the Royal Coll. of Music, where he studied conducting with Lambert and piano with Benjamin. He began his career working in radio and television in London, and in 1945 he became asst. conductor of the BBC Theatre Orch. From 1948 he held administrative posts with the BBC, retiring in 1974. His books include Going to a Concert (London, 1950), Going to the Opera (London, 1955), The Musician and His World (London, 1963), and Music and the 20th-Century Media (with J. Bornoff; Florence, 1972); he also compiled a useful Gramophone Guide to Classical Music and Recordings
