Ripa, Alberto da , Italian lutenist and composer, known as Alberto da Mantovano ; b. Mantua, c. 1500; d. Paris, 1551. He was in the service of Èrcole Gonzaga, Cardinal of Mantua, and in 1529 entered the service of François I of France, becoming valet de chambre du roi in 1533. His Tablature de luth was brought out posthumously by his pupil Guillaume Morlaye (6 books, Paris, 1552–58). See J.-M.
