Padilla, Juan Gutiérrez de
Padilla, Juan Gutiérrez de,significant Spanishborn Mexican composer; b. Malaga, c. 1590; d. Puebla, Mexico, c. April 22, 1664. He received instruction from Francisco Vazquez as a member of the cathedral choir in Malaga. By 1613 he was maestro de capilla in Jerez de la Frontera. After entering the priesthood, he served as maestro di capilla at Cádiz Cathedral (1616–20?). He subsequently went to Mexico, where he was a singer and co-adjutor maestro at Pueblo Cathedral (1622–29) and later its maestro de capilla. Padilla was a master of polyphony. Among his works were about 50 sacred vocal pieces and many secular villancicos.
