Novello, (Joseph) Alfred
Novello, (Joseph) Alfred, prominent English music publisher, son of Vincent Novello and brother of Clara (Anastasia) Novello; b. London, Aug. 12, 1810; d. Genoa, July 16, 1896. He joined his father’s music publishing venture when he was 19 and was instrumental in making it a commercial success as Novello & Co.; the firm prospered by bringing out eds. of the classics, most notably of choral music. He was also active as a bass singer, organist, choirmaster, and composer. He retired to Genoa in 1856.
