Naylor, Edward (Woodall)

Naylor, Edward (Woodall), English organist and composer, son of John Naylor and father of Bernard (James) Naylor; b. Scarborough, Feb. 9, 1867; d. Cambridge, May 7, 1934. He studied with his father, then at Emmanuel Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1887; Mus.B. and M.A., 1891; Mus.D., 1897) and at London’s Royal Coll. of Music (1888–92). He was organist at St. Michael, Chester Square (1889–96) and St. Mary, Kilburn (1896–97), then asst. master at the Leys School and organist at Emmanuel Coll., Cambridge, where he also was a lecturer (from 1902). He publ. Shakespeare and Music (London, 1896; 2nd ed., 1931), An Elizabethan Virginal Book (London, 1905), Shakespeare Music (London, 1912; 2nd ed., 1928), and The Poets and Music (London, 1928). Among his works were an opera, The Angelus (London, Jan. 27, 1909; won the Ricordi prize), Tokugawa, overture (Tokyo, 1919), sacred music, men’s choruses, and chamber music.
