Müller, Maria

Müller, Maria, Austrian soprano; b. Leitmeritz, Jan. 29, 1898; d. Bayreuth, March 13, 1958. She studied with Erik Schmedes in Vienna and Max Altglass in N.Y. She made her operatic debut as Elsa in Linz in 1919; then sang at the German Theater in Prague (1921–23) and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1923–24). On Jan. 21, 1925, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Sieglinde, remaining on its roster until 1935. In 1926 she joined the Berlin Städtische Oper. From 1927 to 1943 she sang at the Berlin State Opera. She also sang at the Wagner festivals in Bayreuth (1930–44) and in Salzburg.
