Müller-Hermann, Johanna

Müller-Hermann, Johanna, Austrian composer and pedagogue; b. Vienna, Jan. 15, 1878; d. there, April 19, 1941. She studied with Nawrátil, Josef Labor, Guido Adler, Zemlinsky, and J.B. Foerster. She began to compose at an early age, in a Romantic vein, influenced chiefly by Mahler and Reger; was regarded as one of the foremost European women composers of orch. and chamber music of her time. She wrote an oratorio, In Memoriam, to Walt Whitman’s words, a Sym. for Voices with Orch., a Symphonic Fantasy on Ibsen’s play Brand, String Quartet, String Quintet, Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata, Cello Sonata, Piano Sonata, and several song cycles.
