Mueller (actually, Müller) von Asow, Erich H (ermann)

Mueller (actually, Müller) von Asow, Erich H (ermann), noted German musicologist; b. Dresden, Aug. 31, 1892; d. Berlin, June 4, 1964. He studied with Riemann and Schering at the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1915, with the diss. Die Mingottischen Opernunternehmungen, 1732–1756; publ, in Dresden, 1917, as Angelo und Pietro Mingotti: Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Oper im XVIII. Jahrhundert).During World War I, he was active as a military bandmaster. After serving as asst. director of Leipzig’s Neue Theater, he was artistic director of Dresden’s international festival for modern music (1917–18). He was director of the Wernow Theater (1918–19) and then was active as a music critic in Berlin and Dresden; joined the staff of Dresden’s Pädagogium der Tonkunst (1926), serving as its director (1927–33). He went to Austria (1936), and after being briefly under arrest by the Gestapo (1943), he returned to Germany in 1945, where he founded the Internationales Musiker-Brief-Archiv in Berlin.
