Morris, Wyn

Morris, Wyn , Welsh conductor; b. Trlech, Feb. 14, 1929. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Salzburg Mozarteum. He was apprentice conductor with the Yorkshire Sym. Orch. (1950–51) and conductor of an army band (1951–53). In 1954 he founded the Welsh Sym. Orch.; in 1957 he went to the U.S., where he led the Cleveland Chamber Orch. and other groups. In 1960 he returned to Great Britain, where he served as conductor of the choir of the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales (1960–62), of the Royal Choral Soc. of London (1968–70), and of the Huddersfield Choral Soc. (1969–74). He then organized the Symphonica of London, with which he gave regular concerts in ambitious programs, particularly of Mahler’s music.
