Mayone, Ascanio

Mayone, Ascanio , Italian organist, harpist, and composer; b. Naples, c. 1565; d. there, March 9, 1627. He spent his entire career in his native city. After training from Giovanni Domenico da Noia, he became organist of the church of the Ss. Annunziata in 1593, where, from 1595, he served as joint maestro di cappella. In 1602 he also became 2nd organist of the royal chapel of the Spanish viceroys, becoming 1st organist in 1614. May-one was a significant composer of keyboard music. In his 2 vols, of capricci per sonare (Naples, 1603, 1609), his canzonas and toccatas point the way toward a more advanced style. He also pubi, a vol. of madrigals (Naples, 1604).
