Maconie, Robin (John)

Maconie, Robin (John), New Zealand composer and writer on music; b. Auckland, Oct. 22, 1942. He studied at Victoria Univ., Wellington (B.A., 1962; M.A., 1963), and later with Messiaen at the Paris Cons. (1963–64) and with Zimmermann and Eimert at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik (1964–65); also attended Stockhausen’s lectures at the Darmstadt summer courses. He returned to New Zealand as a composer for film and theater, and also lectured at the Univ. of Auckland (1967–68). In 1969 he settled in England, where he engaged in music criticism and research in musical phenomenology. He publ. The Works of Karlheinz Stockhausen (London, 1975; 2nd ed., 1991) and ed. Stockhausen on Music: Lectures and Interviews (London, 1989).
