MacArdle, Donald Wales

MacArdle, Donald Wales, American musicologist; b. Quincy, Mass., July 3, 1897; d. Littleton, Colo., Dec. 23, 1964. He studied science at the Mass. Inst. of Technology, obtaining an M.S. in chemical engineering. He also took courses at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y., and studied musicology at N.Y.U. Although he earned his living as an engineer, he devoted much time to scholarly research, mainly to the minutiae of Beethoven’s biography. He contributed a number of valuable articles on the subject to the Musical Quarterly and other journals. He ed., with L. Misch, New Beethoven Letters(Norman, Okla., 1957), ed. and tr. Schindler’s Biographie von Ludwig van Beethoven, 3rd ed., 1860, as Beethoven as I Knew Him (London and Chapel Hill, 1966), and also prepared An Index to Beethoven’s Conversation Books(Detroit, 1962) and, with S. Pogodda, Beethoven Abstracts (Detroit, 1973).
