Lutz, (Wilhelm) Meyer

Lutz, (Wilhelm) Meyer, German-born English organist, conductor, and composer; b. Männer Stadt, near Kissingen, 1822?; d. London, Jan. 31, 1903. He studied with his father and later attended the Univ. of Würzburg, where his mentors in music were Eisenhöfer and Keller. In 1848 he settled in England and was an organist in churches in Birmingham, Leeds, and London. After conducting at the Surrey Theatre in London (1850-55), he was active as a conductor of touring theater companies. In 1869 he became music director of the Gaiety Theatre in London, for which he composed much light music. His barn-dance music for the pas de quatre from his burlesque Faust Up-to-Date (London, Oct. 30, 1888) was popular.
