Levey, William Charles

Levey, William Charles, Irish conductor and composer, son of Richard Michael Levey and brother of Richard C. Levey; b. Dublin, April 25, 1837; d. London, Aug. 18, 1894. He studied with his father, and then with Auber, Thalberg, and Prudent in Paris. He then was a conductor at London’s Drury Lane Theatre (1868–74), Covent Garden, and other theaters. He wrote the operettas Panchette (London, Jan. 4, 1864), Punchinello (London, Dec. 28, 1864), and The Girls of the Period (London, Feb. 25, 1869), as well as incidental music, pantomimes, The Man of War, fantasia for Chorus, Military Band, and Orch. (1874), 3 cantatas, many songs, and piano pieces.
