Lemnitz, Tiana (Luise)

Lemnitz, Tiana (Luise), remarkable German soprano; b. Metz, Oct. 26, 1897; d. Berlin, Feb. 5, 1994. She studied with Hoch in Metz and Kohmann in Frankfurt am Main. She made her operatic debut in Lortzing’s Undine in Heilbronn (1920), then sang in Aachen (1922–28). Lemnitz subsequently pursued a distinguished career as a member of the Hannover Opera (1928–33), the Dresden State Opera (1933–34), and the Berlin State Opera (1934–57). She also made guest appearances in Vienna, Munich, London’s Covent Garden (1936, 1938), and Buenos Aires’s Teatro Colon (1936, 1950). Her repertoire included many leading roles in German, Italian, French, and Russian operas. Among her most celebrated portrayals were Pamina, Sieglinde, Desdemona, Micaëla, Octavian, and the Marschallin.
