Legley, Victor

Legley, Victor, outstanding Belgian composer; b. Hazebrouck, June 18, 1915; d. Ostend, Nov.28, 1994. He studied viola, chamber music, counterpoint, and fugue at the Brussels Cons, (from 1934), then took private lessons in composition with Absil (1941), subsequently winning the Belgian Second Prix de Rome (1943). He was a violist in the Belgian Radio Sym. Orch. (1936–48); then was a music producer for the Flemish dept. of the Belgian Radio, and later was made head of its serious music broadcasts on its 3rd program (1962). He taught at the Brussels Cons. (1949–80). He became a member of the Belgian Royal Academy (1965); was its president (1972); was chairman of the Société Belge des Auteurs, Compositeurs, et Editeurs (from 1981). In his works, Legley adheres to the pragmatic tenets of modern music, structurally diversified and unconstricted by inhibitions against dissonance. His Second Violin Concerto was a mandatory work of the 1967 Queen Elisabeth violin competition finals.
