Janiewicz, Feliks

Janiewicz, Feliks, Polish violinist and composer; b. Vilnius, 1762; d. Edinburgh, May 21, 1848. He joined the Polish royal chapel as a violinist in 1777. In 1785 he went to Vienna, where he met Haydn and Mozart. Following a sojourn in Italy, he went to Paris and played at the Concert Spirituel in 1787; later he was a member of the chapel of the Duke of Orléans. In 1792 he made his London debut. In 1794 he played in Haydn’s London concerts, and then toured England. In 1803 he founded his own music business in Liverpool. About 1815 he settled in Edinburgh, but he continued to give concerts until 1829. Among his works were five violin concertos, a Piano Concerto, chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
