Ives, Elam, Jr.

Ives, Elam, Jr., American music educator; b. Hamden, Conn., Jan. 7, 1802; d. there, Feb. 10, 1864. He taught piano, violin, and singing, and was active as a choirmaster. After serving as head of the Philadelphia Musical Seminary (1830–36), he ran his own music school in N.Y. He publ. numerous school songbooks, sacred music collections, and art songs. Ives was an influential figure in the development of public school music in the U.S. through his championship of Pestalozzi’s theories as applied to music education.
