Incledon, Charles

Incledon, Charles, English tenor; b. St. Keverne, Cornwall (baptized), Feb. 5, 1763; d. London, Feb. 18, 1826. He was a chorister at Exeter Cathedral, and then began his career at the Southampton theater in 1784. Following training from Rauzzini, he made his London debut at Vauxhall Gardens in 1786. He subsequently was a leading singer at various London theaters. He also appeared widely as a concert artist, and was a soloist in the London premiere of Haydn’s Creation in 1800. Incledon was notably successful with his appearances as “The Wandering Melodist,” in which he presented popular sea and patriotic ballads. In 1817-18 he made a highly successful tour of the U.S. His farewell appearance took place in 1822.
