Hiller, Friedrich, Adam

Hiller, Friedrich, Adam, German violinist, singer, conductor, and composer, son of Johann Adam Hiller; b. Leipzig, c. 1767; d. Königsberg, Nov. 23, 1812. He received training from his father. He began his career as a violinist in Leipzig, and then made his operatic debut as Romeo in Romeo und Julie in Rostock in 1789. In 1790 he became director of a music soc. in Schwerin. In 1796 he was named music director of the National Theater orch. in Altona and in 1799 of the Königsberg Theater. He composed a number of stage works and other vocal pieces, most of which are not extant. He also wrote several string quartets.
