Hall, Tubby (Alfred)

Hall, Tubby (Alfred), jazz drummer; brother of Minor Hall; b. Sellers, La., Oct. 12, 1895; d. Chicago, III, May 13, 1946. The family moved to New Orleans in the early 1900s. Hall played drums from his early teens, working with various marching bands, then worked regularly with the Crescent Orch. from 1914; he also worked with the Eagle Band and Silver Leaf. He moved to Chicago in March 1917, joining Sugar Johnny Smith’s Band that May. He served in U.S. Army for two years, then played in Chicago for various bandleaders including King Oliver, Jimmie Noone, Tiny Parham, Clarence Black, Carroll Dickerson, Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, and Boyd Atkins. During the 1930s, Hall did several stints with Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone. He also led his own groups on occasion (1935; 1945-46). He continued to play regularly until shortly before his death.
