Gunn, Glenn Dillard

Gunn, Glenn Dillard, American pianist, conductor, and music critic; b. Topeka, Kans., Oct. 2, 1874;d. Washington, D.C., Nov. 22, 1963. He studied at the Leipzig Cons, and in Chicago with Ziehn (theory). He taught at the Chicago Musical Coll. (1901-05). In 1915 he founded the American Sym. Orch., whose object was the performance of American works and the engagement of American soloists; in 1922 he founded the Glenn Dillard Gunn School of Music and Dramatic Art; in 1932 he became artistic director of the Chicago Cons, of Music. He was music critic for the Chicago Tribune (1910-15), the Chicago Herald and Examiner (1922-36), and the Washington Times-Herald (1940-54). He publ. A Course of Lessons on the History and Aesthetics of Music (Chicago, 1912) and Music, Its History and Enjoyment (N.Y., 1930).
