Gordeli, Otar

Gordeli, Otar, Russian composer; b. Tiflis, Nov. 18, 1928. He studied composition with Andrei Balanchivadze; later took courses at the Moscow Cons., graduating in 1955. In 1959 he was appointed instructor at the Tbilisi Cons. In his music, he applied resources of native folk songs; his polyphonic structure was considerably advanced.

Works: Piano Concerto (1952); The Seasons, cantata for Narrator, Boy’s Chorus, and Chamber Orch. (1955); Concertino for Flute and Orch. (1958); Festive Overture (1959); Georgian Dance for Orch. (1961); Sym. (1964); film music; jazz pieces.
