Gervais, Charles-Hubert
Gervais, Charles-Hubert, French composer; b. Paris, Feb. 19, 1671; d. there, Jan. 15, 1744. He was in the service of the Duke of Chartres (later of Orléans) as his ordinaire de la musique by 1697. In 1700 he became his maître de musique and in 1712 his intendant de la musique. After his patron became Regent of France, he was made one of the four sous-maîtres of the Royal Chapel in 1723. He composed the operas Méduse (1697), Pentheé (1705), and Hypermnéstre (Paris Opéra, Nov. 3, 1716), a ballet, Les amours de Protée (1720), 6 cantatas, 45 motets, and airs.
