Enthoven, (Henri) Emile

Enthoven, (Henri) Emile, Dutch composer; b. Amsterdam, Oct. 18, 1903; d. N.Y., Dec. 26, 1950. He studied composition with Wagenaar at the Royal Cons, of Music in The Hague and with Schreker in Berlin. At the age of 14, he wrote an adolescent but well-crafted sym., which Mengelberg performed with the Concertgebouw Orch. in Amsterdam (1918). But this precocious success was not a manifestation of enduring talent; his later works lacked originality. Soon he abandoned composition altogether and took up jurisprudence; in 1939 he emigrated to N.Y. Among his works are 3 syms. (1917, 1924, 1931) and a Violin Concerto (1920).
