Doese, Helena

Doese, Helena, Swedish soprano; b. Goteborg, Aug. 13, 1946. She received training in Goteborg and from Luigi Ricci in Rome and Erik Werba and Gerald Moore in Vienna. Following her opératic debut in 1971 as Aida in Goteborg, she sang with the Bern opéra. In 1974 she made her first appearance at the Glyndebourne Festival as Mozart’s Countess and made her debut at London’s Covent Garden as Mimi. From 1975 she made regular appearances at the Royal opéra in Stockholm, where her roles included Eva, Liu, Mimi, and Kat’a Kabanova. She made her U.S. debut in 1982 at the San Francisco opéra as Countess Almaviva. In 1987 she portrayed Agathe at the Berlin Deutsche Oper. In 1992 she was engaged as Ariadne in Stuttgart. She appeared as Chrysothemis in Frankfurt am Main in 1994. Among her other roles were Fiordiligi, Amelia Boccanegra, Sieglinde, the Marschallin, and Jenufa.
