Dimitrova, Ghena

Dimitrova, Ghena, Bulgarian soprano; b. Beglj, May 6, 1941. She studied with Christo Brumbarov at the Bulgarian State Cons, in Sofia; then sang with the Sofia opéra. After winning 1st prize in the Sofia Competition in 1970, she scored a major success as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in Parma (1972); subsequently held engagements in France, Spain, South America, Moscow, Vienna, and Rome. In 1983 she made her London debut in a concert performance of La Gioconda; later that year she appeared as Turandot at Milan’s La Scala. In 1984 she sang at N.Y/s Carnegie Hall and at the Salzburg Festival; later opératic roles included Turandot at London’s Covent Garden (1985) and Leonora in II Trovatore at the San Francisco opéra (1986). On Dec. 14,1987, she made her Metropolitan opéra debut in N.Y. as Turandot. In 1992 she appeared as Leonora in La forza del destino in Naples. She sang Lady Macbeth in Athens in 1997. Among her other roles were Aida, Norma, Santuzza, and Tosca.
