Danzi, Franz (Ignaz)

Danzi, Franz (Ignaz) , German composer and teacher; b. Schwetzingen, June 15, 1763; d. Karlsruhe, April 13, 1826. He received primary instruction in music from his father, Innocenz Danzi, a cellist, and later took theory lessons with Abbé Vogler. He became a cellist in the Mannheim Court Orch. After the orch. removed to Munich in 1778, he remained in Mannheim as a member of the orch. of the new National Theater. In 1783 he went to Munich as successor of his father in the Court Orch. In 1798 he became asst. Kapellmeister. From 1807 to 1812 he was Kapellmeister in Stuttgart, where he was the teacher of Weber. He then settled in Karlsruhe. He was an excellent singing teacher, and wrote vocal exercises of practical value.
