Cuberli, Leila (Alice) , American soprano; b. Austin, Tex., Sept. 29, 1945. She was educated at Southern Methodist Univ. (B.Mus., 1974). In 1975 she made her operatic debut as Violetta in Budapest. Following her first appearance at Milan’s La Scala as Mozart’s Constanze in 1978, she sang there frequently in later years. She also toured with the company to the Edinburgh Festival in 1982 in Handel’s Ariodante. In 1985 she made her debut as a soloist at the Berlin Festival. She sang Mozart’s Countess at her first appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1986. After an engagement as Violetta in Brussels in 1987, she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1988 in // viaggio a Reims. On Nov. 30, 1990, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Rossini’s Semiramis. She sang Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffinann at the Opera de la Bastille in Paris in 1992, and that same year appeared as Mozart’s Countess with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, London, on the company’s visit to Japan. In 1996 she was engaged as Donna Anna at the Salzburg Festival. As a concert artist, she sang with many major orchs.
