Cigna, Gina (real name, Ginetta Sens)

Cigna, Gina (real name, Ginetta Sens), French soprano of Italian descent; b. Paris, March 6, 1900. She was a pupil of Calvé, Darclée, and Storchio. After making her operatic debut as Freia at Milan’s La Scala in 1927, she was on its roster (1929–43); also appeared at London’s Covent Garden (1933; 1936–37; 1939). On Feb. 6, 1937, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Aida, and sang there until 1938 in such roles as Leonora in II Trovatore, Gioconda, Norma, Donna Elvira, and Santuzza. After World War II, she taught voice in Milan; also was on the faculty of the Royal Cons, of Music of Toronto (1953–57).
