Carr, Mancy (Peck)
early jazz banjo player, guitarist; b. Charleston, W. Va., c. 1900; d. unknown. He is chiefly remembered for his recorded work with Louis Armstrong in 1928 and 1929. He worked with Carroll Dickerson in 1924, then played in Lottie Hightower’s Night Hawks (1925) before rejoining Carroll Dickerson; worked with that leader for several years and went with him (and Louis Armstrong) to N.Y. in 1929. He returned to Chicago, then moved back to W.Va. and worked there with his brother. He is thought to have died many years ago. He has mistakenly been referred to as a white musician. In some jazz histories, his name was misspelled as “Cara.”
