Carfiart, George jazz guitarist, banjoist, band leader; b. July 21, 1905; d. N.Y., Sept. 1984. Taught by Elmer Snowden, Carhart played in the school band at George Washington High in N.Y. He played various summer seasons, then organized his own all-star band that played regularly in Europe during the late 1920s (some of the musicians employed were Bud Freeman, Danny Polo, Jack Purvis, and Dave Tough). He continued to lead bands during the 1930s and played on several liner cruises. He retired in the 1940s.
