Carewe, John (Maurice Foxall)

Carewe, John (Maurice Foxall) English conductor; b. Derby, Jan. 24, 1933. After studies with W. Goehr, Deutsch, and Boulez at the Guildhall School of Music in London, and with Messiaen at the Paris Cons., he organized the New Music Ensemble (1958). He was also on the staff of Morley Coll. (1958–66) and was principal conductor of the BBC Welsh Sym. Orch. in Cardiff (1966–71); he subsequently was music director of the Brighton Phil. Soc. (1974–87) and principal conductor of the Fires of London (1980–84). In 1993 he became music director of the City Theater and Robert Schumann Phil, in Chemnitz.
