Bennewitz (real name, Benevic), Anton(ín), Czech violinist and pedagogue; b. Privaty, near Litomysl, March 26, 1833; d. Dosky, near Lito-mérice, May 29, 1926. He was a pupil of M. Mildner at the Prague Cons. (1846–52), where he served as prof. of violin (from 1865) and as director (1882–1901). His students included Sevcik, Suk, Karel Hoffmann, Halir, F. Ondricek, and Nedbal
