Baumann, Hermann (Rudolf Konrad)

Baumann, Hermann (Rudolf Konrad), noted German horn player and pedagogue; b. Hamburg, Aug. 1, 1934. He received training in Hamburg. In 1957 he became first horn in Dortmund, and then held that position with the Stuttgart Radio Sym. Orch. from 1961 to 1967. In 1964 he won the Munich Competition and began to pursue a solo career. In 1969 he became a prof. at the Staatliche Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, and in 1980 at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik. In addition to his appearances as a soloist with leading German and European orchs., he also was engaged with minor orchs. in North America. He also appeared in chamber music settings. After an engagement with the Buffalo Phil, on Jan. 12, 1993, he suffered a stroke; however, he was able to resume his career. While his repertoire embraces scores from the Baroque era to the moderns, he has won particular distinction for his performances of Mozart and Richard Strauss.
