Baryphonus, Henricus (Real Name, Heinrich Pipegrop), German music theorist and composer; b. Wernigerode, Harz, Sept. 17, 1581; d. Quedlinburg, Saxe-Anhalt, Jan. 13, 1655. He studied at the Lateinschule in his native town, and then continued his education at the Univ. of Helmstedt. In 1605 he went to Quedlinburg, where he became cantor at St. Benedicti and a teacher at the Gymnasium; from 1606 was Sub-konrector there. He wrote some 17 treatises on music, but only his Pleiades musicae, quae in certas sectiones distributae praecipuas quaestiones musicas discutiunt (Halberstadt, 1615) is extant. Only two of his compositions survive.
