Balart, Gabriel

Balart, Gabriel, Spanish composer; b. Barcelona, June 8, 1824; d. there, July 5, 1893. He studied at the Paris Cons. He composed various pieces of salon music, which enjoyed some success. In 1849 he went to Milan as a theater conductor, and in 1853 he was appointed music director of the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona. For a time his light opera Amor y Arte enjoyed considerable success.
