Arnoldson, Sigrid

Arnoldson, Sigrid, Swedish soprano; b. Stockholm, March 20, 1861; d. there, Feb. 7, 1943. She began her training with her father, the tenor Oscar Arnoldson (1830–81). After further training from Maurice Strakosch and Désirée Artôt, she made her operatic debut as Rosina in Prague in 1885. In 1886 she sang in Moscow, and in 1887 at London’s Drury Lane Theatre. In 1888 she returned to London to make her Covent Garden debut, where she sang again from 1892 to 1894. On Nov. 29, 1893, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Baucis, where she sang for a season. She then pursued her career in Europe, retiring in 1916. From 1922 to 1938 she taught in Vienna, and then in Stockholm. She was noted for her command of coloratura and lyric roles, but she also was a fine Carmen.
