Araujo, Juan de
Araujo, Juan de, Spanish composer; b. Villafranca de los Barros, Extremadura, 1646; d. La Plata, Bolivia, 1712. He was taken to Lima at an early age by his father, where he studied at the Univ. of S. Marcos. After participating in student disruption, he was banished and was active as a choirmaster in Panama. In 1672 he returned to Lima and entered the priesthood. He served as choirmaster at the Cathedral until 1676. From 1680 until his death he was choirmaster at La Plata Cathedral. He was a distinguished composer of villancicos of which he wrote about 200.
