Alvary (real name, Achenbach), Max(imilian)

Alvary (real name, Achenbach), Max(imilian), German tenor; b. Dusseldorf, ’ May 3, 1856; d. near Gross-Tabarz, Thuringia, Nov. 7, 1898. He studied with Stockhausen in Frankfurt am Main and Lamperti in Milan. In 1879 he made his operatic debut as Max Anders in Alessandro Stradella in Weimar. On Nov. 25, 1885, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Don José, remaining on its roster until 1889. In 1891 he sang Tristan and Tannhàuser at the Bayreuth Festival, and in 1892 he made his debut at London’s Covent Garden as the young Siegfried. He was compelled to retire from the operatic stage due to poor health in 1897. Alvary was especially successful as a Wagnerian.
