Trois Couleurs: Bleu ★★★ Three Colors: Blue; Blue 1993 (R)

First installment of director Kieslowski's trilogy inspired by the French tricolor flag. “Blue” stands for liberty—here freedom is based on tragedy as Julie (Binoche) reshapes her life after surviving an accident which killed her famous composer husband and their young daughter. Excellent performance by Binoche, which relies on the internalized grief and brief emotion which flits across her face rather than overwhelming displays for expression. In French with English subtitles. 98m/C VHS, DVD .
