Swept Away ★ 2002 (R)

Guy Ritchie directs his wife Madonna in this ill-advised remake of Lina Wertmuller's politically charged romantic comedy. Amber (Madonna) arrives with her husband (Greenwood) as part of a group of ugly Americans taking a tour of the Greek islands on a yacht. A demanding prima (Ma)donna, she is especially rude to first mate Giuseppe (Giannini), whom she calls either “Guido” or “Pee Pee.” Amber demands that Guiseppe take her out in the dinghy and they run out of gas and are forced to drift. They end up on a deserted island where Giuseppe now has the upper hand and begins to dominate Amber. Despite the fact that these actors fail at chemistry worse than remedial students, we're supposed to believe that they fall in love. “Gilligan's Island” is more believable, with more romantic sparks. Adriano Giannini reprises the role his father Gian-carlo played in the original. 93m/C VHS, DVD . US Madonna, Adriano Giannini, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Bruce Greenwood, David Thornton, Yorgo Voyagis, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Beattie; D: Guy Ritchie; W: Guy Ritchie; C: Alex Barber; M: Michel Colombier.
