Moonstruck ★★★½ 1987 (PG-13)

Winning romantic comedy about widow engaged to one man but falling in love with his younger brother in Little Italy. Excellent performances all around, with Cher particularly fetching as attractive, hapless widow. Unlikely casting of usually dominating Aiello, as unassuming mama's boy also works well, and Cage is at his best as a tormented one-handed opera lover/baker. 103m/C VHS, DVD . Cher, Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia, Julie Bovasso, Louis Guss, Anita Gillette, Feodor Chaliapin Jr., John Mahoney; D: Norman Jewison; W: John Patrick Shanley; C: David Watkin; M: Dick Hyman. Oscars ‘87: Actress (Cher), Orig. Screenplay, Support. Actress (Dukakis); Berlin Intl. Film Fest. ‘87: Director (Jewison); Golden Globes ‘88: Actress—Mus./Comedy (Cher), Support. Actress (Dukakis); L.A. Film Critics ‘87: Support. Actress (Dukakis); Natl. Bd. of Review ‘87: Support. Actress (Dukakis); Writers Guild ‘87: Orig. Screenplay.
