The Killers ★★★★ 1946
Classic film noir based on a Hemingway story. Lancaster's film debut comes as an ex-boxer, “The Swede,” who's murdered in a contract hit. Insurance investigator Jim Reardon (O'Brien) reconstructs the young man's life, discovering his involvement with crime boss Big Jim Colfax (Dekker) and double-crossing femme fatale Kitty Collins (Gardner). So Reardon sets out to set up Colfax and Kitty. Rosza's musical score may sound familiar—it was later used on the TV series “Dragnet.” 105m/B VHS, DVD . Edmond O'Brien, Albert Dekker, Ava Gardner, Burt Lancaster, Sam Levene, William Conrad, Charles McGraw, Virginia Christine; D: Robert Siodmak; W: Anthony Veiller, John Huston; C: Elwood “Woody” Bredell; M: Miklos Rozsa.
