The Interpreter ★★★½ 2005 (PG-13)

White, native African U.N. interpreter Sylvia Broome (Kidman) accidently overhears a plot to kill the corrupt and murderous president of a small African country, a man with whom her family has a past. Tobin Keller (Penn) is the burned-out, recently-widowed Secret Service agent assigned to investigate her claim and, if necessary, protect her as a possible witness. Pollack's taut thriller is wellpaced and full of twists and revelations that succeed in keeping the resolution in doubt right up to the end. Kidman and Penn are excellent, as is Keener in the thankless role of Keller's levelheaded partner. 128m/C DVD, HD DVD . US Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, Jesper Christensen, Yvan Attal, Michael Wright, Earl Cameron, George Harris, Tsai Chin, Clyde Kusatsu, Hugo Speer, Maz Jobrani, Eric Keenleyside, Christopher Evan Welch, David Zayas, Sydney Pollack, Curtiss Cook, Byron Utley; D: Sydney Pollack; W: Charles Randolph, Scott Frank, Steven Zaillian; C: Darius Khondji; M: James Newton Howard.
